Significance of test
Celiac disease (CD) or gluten sensitive enteropathy is a chronic disease in which an intestinal mucosa lesion impairs nutrient absorption. While exact eitiology of celiac disease remains unknown, gliadin, the alcohol soluble fraction of wheat gluten, is clearly the toxic agent. The association between dermatitis herpetiformis and gluten sensitive enteropathy is so strong that it has been suggested that both disease have same etiology; in these patients TGA determination is useful to detect an asymptomatic celiac disease and to estimate the severity of gastrointestinal involvement.
