Significance of test
Cancer antigen 125 is found to exist in the coelomic epithelium of embryo genesis and disappear in several hours after birth. Over-expressed CA 125 levels are observed in ovarian carcinoma. Generally CA 125 can't be involved in the circulation of blood therefore its level is low in healthy people and benign diseases. Elevated values of CA 125 are found in tumor development and metastasis especially in ovarian carcinoma due to its involvement in the circulation of blood. Serum CA 125 levels increase apparently in patients with ovarian carcinoma. CA 125 levels in serum may be used to detect therapeutic effect for patients with epithelial ovarian carcinoma. The elevation of CA 125 persistently may be associated with disease progression. Persistently elevated CA 125 levels indicate poor response to therapy, whereas decreasing CA 125 levels may indicate a good therapeutic response. A value below the cut off does not show the absence of residual cancer. It may also be elevated in diseases other than epithelial ovarian carcinoma, such as endometriosis, pregnancy, lung cancer and other non-cancerous conditions.
