CREATINE KINASE (CK)-NAC
Pre-test preparation or requirements
• Sample can be drawn at any time. No fasting or special preparation required.
• Sample should taken in plain vial.
Total CK Males- <195 U/l
Females- <170 U/l
Significance of test
Creatine kinase (CK), formerly known as creatine phosphokinase, is an intracellular enzyme present in greatest amounts in skeletal muscle, myocardium, and brain; smaller amounts occur in other visceral tissues. A significant concentration of CK–MB isoenzyme is found almost exclusively in the myocardium, and the appearance of elevated CK–MB levels in serum is highly specific and sensitive for myocardial cell wall injury.
Indication of myocardial infarction is based on the following factors-
Total CK Males- >195 U/l at 37 deg C
Females- >170 U/l at 37 deg C
CK-MB >24 U/l at 37 deg C
CK-MB to total CK >6% to 25%
