Significance of test
Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) enzyme is produced in many tissues but mostly in serum is derived from the liver. Serum levels of GGT depend on factors such as: alcohol intake, body fat content, plasma lipid/lipoproteins and glucose levels, and various medic High levels of GGT have been associated with increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
GGT is predominantly used as a diagnostic marker for liver disease. Latent elevation in GGT is seen in patients with chronic viral hepatitis infections. Elevated serum GGT activity can be found in diseases of the liver, biliary system, pancreas and kidneys.
