Significance of test
Indirect bilirubin is a parameter of liver function and hemoglobin (RBC) turnover. Bilirubin is degradation product of hemoglobin. Birubin is transported to liver for final excretion by conjugation. Indirect bilirubin measures the unconjugated bilirubin. Increased production of bilirubin and or decreased uptake by liver causes increased unconjugated bilirubin in blood.
