Significance of test
Most of the circulating testosterone is bound to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), some bind to albumin untightly, and some is free. The abnormal low level of total testosterone in men is helpful in the diagnosis for hypogonadism, hypophysis disfunction, high prolactin and renal failure, liver cirrhosis and chromosome aberrations (Klinefelter's syndrome). Higher total testosterone level in men may be found with adrenal tumor, adrenal hyperplasia, testicular tumor, and in women may be indicative of polycystic ovaries (PCOS), stroma bubble films hyperplasia, ovaries tumor, adrenal tumor, adrenal hyperplasia. Testosterone plays an important role in health both in men and women, including enhancing sexuality; strength and immunity function, and inhibit osteoporosis.
