Significance of test
Uric acid is a waste end product of purines. Most uric acid dissolves in the blood and passes through the kidneys and excreted in urine.
Increased uric acid level called hyperuricemia can cause crystals of uric acid (or urate) to form and these crystals can settle in the joints. Deposition of crystals in joints causes arthritis (Gout). Crystals can also settle in the kidneys and form kidney stones.
If left untreated increased uric acid levels may lead to permanent bone, joint, tissue damage, kidney disease and heart disease.
