URINE SPOT EXAMINATION
Pre-test preparation or requirements
• Spot urine sample is collected along with one venous blood in plain vial.
Total urinary proteins 0.01 -0.14 g/l
Protein/ creatinine ratio <0.2
Serum creatinine male- 0.6-1.4 mg/dl , female- 0.5- 1.2 mg/dl
EGFR >90 ml/min/1.73 msq
Significance of test
The ratio of urine protein to urine creatinine ratio reliably detects significant proteinuria and is useful in assessing patients with proteinuria. The testing can be performed on spot samples.
In patients with type 1 diabetes, the ratio correlates with 24 hour urine protein levels in grams per day, but becomes less accurate if the ratio is greater than 3.5. The ratio differentiates nephrotic range proteinuria from that seen in some renal diseases.
<= 0.1 healthy person
0.1- 0.2 trace proteinuria
0.2- 1.0 mild proteinuria
1.0- 3.5 moderate proteinuria
>3.5 marked proteinuria
